How reading can improve your life
”Rich people have large libraries, poor people have large TVs” – Jim Rohn
Do you relate with the statement above?
A few days ago I met an old friend, whom I have not seen for a while. As we talked about various things, he mentioned he was still unemployed.
- Home comes? I asked
- You know...the economy, employers want people with experience etc. and I have just finished collage...
- Come on, there are a lot of jobs that don’t even require collage and are well paid.
Let’s go to your place, drink something and think this through!
And so we went to his place to grab a beer. The first new thing that I saw in his house was a big LED TV. Woow, maybe there is a link between reading, watching TV and the money you have.
A link there is indeed! According to Thomas Corley:
67% of rich people watch TV 1h or less each day, compered to only 23% poor people
Similarly, only 6% of the wealthy watch reality shows, compared to 78% of the poor.
Also, 86% of rich people love reading, compared to only 19% of poor people.
And here we are talking about reading only as entertainment!
Why most rich people spend their money on books and not on TV subscriptions?
Here are some advantages:
It is medically proven that reading improve mental capacity, keeps you healthy and increases life expectancy.
Reading can:
- Improve the health of the brain and psychic
- Improve the cardiovascular system and prevent hears disease
- Improve intelligence
- Improve the ability to concentrate
- Improve the rational mind
- Improve memory
- Prevent psycho-emotionaldisorders
- Prevent Alzheimer disease
- Prevent memory loss
- Increase life expectancy
- Etc.
There are huge benefits!
Heart disease are no. 1 killer worldwide. These disease could have fewer fatalities if everyone would read more often.
Instead of spending money on all sorts ofcrap and chemicals that destroy their health, people would be much richer if they would spend money on healthy products.
Unfortunately, many people give money on all sorts of harmful things. This is the bitter reality. Many, too many people find time and money for activities harmful to the body and mind.
But when it comes to finding money and time to maintain their health, the same people jump as burned saying "I have no money! I have no time!"
Sad, is it not?
You can see for yourself. So many people find money for alcohol and cigarettes but they can’t afford to buy their medicine.
So many people find time for activities that poison their mind and they never have time for something that preserve thery psychic young.
I am talking about activities very pleasant for the body and harmful for the brain:
- Prolonged TV watching
- Spending half a day on social media
- Video Games...but not all genres
Studies have shown that mentali disease are more common in children that spend most of their day in front of the TV, on social media or playing video games.
Research have shown that the human brain is not built to be continuously stimulated by external sources like TV and is more adapted to reading.
After more than 50 years of television, researchers have found out that people who spend their entire day in front of the TV have diminished mental capacity. Functions like memory and empathy are 70% lower in persons who prefer to watch TV instead of reading books.
The conclusion is clear
A person who prefers to reading is healthier and smarter than one who prefers watching TV.
Why?
When you watch TV, your brain goes in a state of passivity, which, over time, alters many cognitive functions.
On the other hand, reading activates your brain. While reading, many functions of your brain are switched on and used to create the action and the environment that you are reading about. Such things are already offered to you when watching TV.
”A Healthy mind in a healthy body (Mens sana in corpore sano)”– Latin proverb
Like you go to the gym for workout to keep your body in shape you also have to read books to keep your mind in shape. A passive mind you will never inhabit a healthy body.
I am also interested about your opinion about reading vs. watching TV. Do you have anything to add to my article?
I’d love to hear your opinion!
Best wishes,
Edmond
